Choosing the right entertainment for your special occassion can be a difficult, and at times daunting, task. One of your first questions to ask when trying to find the right entertainment is whether you want to hire a live band or a DJ. There are many factors you can think about. The first issue probably thought about is the cost of a band versus a DJ. Although overall DJs are often slightly less expensive, the cost of DJs and bands can greatly vary, thus some bands can end up less expensive than DJs. Also, live music is considered as much more sophisticated than DJs. It is true that most of today's young adults did grow up with DJs and are thus more familiar with them, the rest of your guests are probably a fair amount less familiar with the culture of DJs. DJs also are unable to handle special requests such as various ethnic styles. Another important question to deal with is how far in advance should you try to book entertainment for your reception. You should try to book your entertainment a good amount of time in advance so that you do not make a decision on who to hire and then lose that band or DJ because someone else has already booked him or her. Another question is how do you find someone to entertain at your reception. Word of mouth is a good way to start. You can ask your friends and family whether they have used a band or DJ that they could refer to you. You can also search on the internet. There are many different types of bands that you can book. First, there is the type called General Business. This type of band should be able to play many different styles for your reception. The way that many New England receptions work is to have a dinner set with jazz and swing followed by a dance set, which often has Motown, classic rock, and Top 40. Sometimes it even has contemporary hits or ethnic pieces. Jazz and Swing groups are low-key, usually playing quieter pieces that are sophisticated and elegant. Big Band or Swing Orchestra groups are a larger and louder version of the previously mentioned group. Finally, there are Ethnic groups, which can greatly vary depending
on what style you are looking for. You can get a klezmer group for a
Jewish function, a reggae or steel drum band for Caribbean, Italian
or Celtic bands, etc. As you can see, you have many styles to choose
from. |
